Naoussa vs Parikia: where to stay in Paros?

It's the question every traveller asks when planning a stay in Paros. Here's an honest comparison, with the pros and cons of each option to help you choose your base.

In Paros, two towns concentrate most of the tourist offer: Parikia, the main port and historic capital, and Naoussa, the former fishing village turned trendy hub of the north. Both have their charms, strengths, and limits — and the choice depends largely on what you're looking for.

This article gives you everything to decide. If you're still hesitating, know there's a third path: staying slightly outside, in a quieter village like Isterni, 5 minutes from Naoussa. That's what we chose for our family villa.

Parikia: the historic capital at the centre of the action

The port and the ferry

If you arrive by boat from Athens, you'll dock in Parikia. It's the transport hub of Paros: ferries to other islands (Naxos, Antiparos, Mykonos, Santorini), buses to the rest of the island, taxis. Practical if you plan to move around a lot.

The historic centre

Parikia has a real ancient heart. The Kastro (old Venetian quarter), the labyrinthine streets, and the Panagia Ekatontapiliani — one of the oldest churches still standing in Christendom (4th century) — give Parikia a historical depth Naoussa doesn't have.

Beaches

Parikia isn't ideal for beaches. The closest, Livadia, is decent but crowded. For beautiful beaches, you need a car or bus.

Atmosphere

More local, more authentic, quieter in the evening. Restaurants are less glamorous than Naoussa but more affordable.

The old harbour

The old harbour of Naoussa has become an Instagram icon, and rightly so: colourful fishing boats, waterside tavernas, bougainvillea, narrow whitewashed lanes, golden evening light. It's stunning, but crowded in July–August.

Beaches

Naoussa is the perfect base for beaches. Kolymbithres, Monastiri, Santa Maria, Laggeri are 10–20 minutes by car or boat-taxi. The most beautiful beaches in Paros are concentrated in the north.

Restaurants and nightlife

This is where you'll find the best tables on the island (and the most expensive): Yemeni, Sigi Ikthios, Anna's Garden. The harbour bars (Linardo, Agosta) liven up the evenings with an elegant cocktail scene. No Mykonos-style clubs — Naoussa keeps a refined atmosphere.

Atmosphere

Sophisticated, international, elegant. Pricier than Parikia. Boutiques are more design-driven (fashion, crafts). "Mini Mykonos" feel, only softer.

Our recommendation: the third way

After several summers on the island, here's what we suggest:

"We built our family villa in Isterni for exactly this reason: we enjoy the quiet of north-west Paros, with a clear view and a large plot, and we're 5 minutes by car from Naoussa's old harbour for dinners and atmosphere."

How long to stay in Paros?

Our advice: one week minimum. Three days is enough to see the essentials but not to feel the island. A week lets you combine:
